Bernardo De Muro Museum

In the heart of Gallura, amidst the authentic atmosphere of Tempio Pausania, lies a place that tells an extraordinary story: the Bernardo De Muro Museum, dedicated to one of the most famous voices on the international opera scene.

A journey through great Italian opera
Born in Tempio Pausania in 1881, Bernardo De Muro was one of the greatest performers of Pietro Mascagni’s works. His debut at the Teatro Costanzi in Cavalleria Rusticana marked the beginning of a brilliant career that led him to perform in the most prestigious theaters, including Teatro alla Scala, where in 1912 he starred in the Italian premiere of >Isabeau, conducted by Tullio Serafin.
His powerful and expressive voice won over not only Italian audiences but international ones as well, particularly in Spain and South America.

The museum: a living memory of a great artist

Today, the Bernardo De Muro Museum is housed within the G.M. Dettori Municipal Library, in the charming and recently restored complex of the former Piarist Fathers’ Franciscan College.

The exhibition path unfolds across three dedicated rooms, alongside spaces featuring photographs, paintings, and personal items, offering visitors an immersive experience into the tenor’s life.

A unique heritage of music and history

The heart of the museum is the precious De Muro Collection, an extensive archive documenting every stage of the artist’s career. The materials on display include:

  • historic records and gramophones
  • original stage costumes
  • sheet music and correspondence
  • vintage photographs and press reviews, curated by De Muro himself
  • personal items and memorabilia

Among these, unique pieces and surprising curiosities stand out: from trunks marked “Brigata Sassari” to everyday objects, and even precious relics like cutlery that belonged to Giuseppe Garibaldi.

A cultural experience in the heart of Gallura

Visiting the Bernardo De Muro Museum means immersing yourself in the history of great Italian opera and discovering the deep bond between an artist and his homeland. It is an unmissable stop for anyone visiting Tempio Pausania who wishes to enjoy an authentic experience of culture, music, and identity.

A place where the voice of a great tenor continues to resonate, telling the story of a Sardinia capable of leaving its mark on the world.
