Experience Alta Gallura: holiday ideas between traditions and festivities
Far from mass tourism circuits, Alta Gallura is an ideal destination for those seeking authenticity, contact with local communities, and the slow rhythm of tradition. Among small towns nestled between granite and hills, the perfect vacation in this part of Sardinia is built by following the calendar of religious and popular festivals: unique opportunities to immerse yourself in the local culture and live experiences full of meaning.
Holy Week rituals: the silent spirituality of Alta Gallura
In Alta Gallura, Holy Week is not just a liturgical event, but a profound moment of identity, where faith, community, and tradition intertwine with emotional power. The villages come to a standstill, the confraternities prepare for weeks, and the celebrations take place with austere solemnity, made of silences, ancient gestures, and songs passed down through generations.
In Tempio Pausania, the rites of “La Chita Santa” take place, which are religious ceremonies that evoke the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The celebrations begin with the solemn Palm Sunday Procession, which winds through the city streets where the faithful have olive branches and ritual palms blessed, hand-woven according to an ancient tradition. Good Friday is the most heartfelt day when the representation of the Via Crucis takes place with the rite of “S’iscravamentu“, the deposition of Jesus from the cross, particularly in Aggius, Luras and Tempio Pausania. On Easter Sunday, S’Incontru is celebrated, the eagerly awaited encounter between the Madonna and the Risen Christ, amid applause and emotion.
Spring: between devotion and rebirth
April and May are months when Alta Gallura is clothed in spirituality and countryside fragrances. Alongside Easter rites, in numerous villages such as Aggius, Luras, Bortigiadas, Luogosanto and Trinità d’Agultu e Vignola, traditional country festivals are celebrated: religious rites in rural churches, followed by community outdoor lunches, accompanied by typical dishes, local wine, and Sardinian dances. It’s the perfect opportunity to experience the convivial dimension of the territory and rediscover the value of slow time, immersed in nature. Among the patron saint festivals in May, the celebration of the Blessed Virgin of Pompei takes place in Viddalba.
Summer: faith, fires, and folklore
Summer is when Alta Gallura explodes with energy, amid patron saint festivals, music, and tradition. In Santa Teresa Gallura, the Feast of the Assumption of the Madonna on August 15 enlivens the village with a suggestive procession on the sea and evenings of conviviality. The sea festivals add a picturesque touch, with festively decorated boats and celebrations that wind between the port and the square.
Summer ideally closes in Luogosanto with the solemn celebration on September 8, dedicated to Our Lady “Queen of Gallura”, known as “Festa Manna di Gaddura“. It’s the most heartfelt festival of the village and one of the oldest and most felt in Sardinia, attracting pilgrims and faithful from all over Gallura: solemn masses in the basilica, processions, musical events, and fireworks displays accompany a day of great spiritual intensity and popular participation.
Winter: music, colors, and celebration with Carnival
In Alta Gallura, winter is anything but silent. In Tempio Pausania, Carnival explodes in a festival of colors, sounds, and irony that involves the entire city and attracts visitors from all over Sardinia. The parades of allegorical floats animate the center with masks, confetti, spectacular costumes, and musical bands, in a crescendo of joy that culminates with the traditional burning of King George, a symbolic and satirical figure of the event. The city fills with shows, live music, masked balls, and moments of widespread celebration, making the Carnival of Tempio an experience to live at least once, as well as the carnivals rich in music and allegorical floats in Badesi and Aggius.
The Christmas period is enlivened by community celebrations, Christmas markets, and festive village decorations, which combine conviviality, tradition, and a spirit of welcome. In Calangianus, a traditional living nativity scene enriches the experience and immerses visitors in the Christmas spirit.
An authentic vacation, all year round
Choosing Alta Gallura as a holiday destination during its festivities means truly getting in touch with the soul of the territory. Between faith, music, cuisine, and identity, each celebration is an invitation to slow down, listen, and participate. A journey that is built with encounters, with people’s stories, and with simple gestures that speak of real Sardinia.
