BORTIGIADAS
Bultiggjata
Nestled among Mediterranean scrub forests, Bortigiadas is one of the oldest centers in Gallura. With a population of about 700 inhabitants—compared to the 1,502 counted in the 1863 census reported by Alberto La Marmora in his Itinerary of the Island of Sardinia, including the “cussorgie”—its territory is divided between the urban center and hamlets both uphill and downhill, stretching from the flat area of Lake Tisiennari along the Coghinas River to Monte Lasana.
The streets of the historic center open onto the wonderful panorama of Piazza Belvedere, which overlooks the Limbara Mountains. Nature trails, a hillside pond, and the Sassari-Tempio-Palau railway line make the Municipal Park a place to lose yourself in nature.
The Forestas regional agency manages the Pampana nursery and the apiary in Conca Manna.
Two granite washhouses take us back to ancient times; local men and women watch visitors from panels featuring terracotta figures by artist Pinuccio Sciola, accompanied by poetic verses. The war memorial by architect Roberto Virdis, in Piazza Santa Croce, offers a personal interpretation of the town’s historical events.
In the 1980s, thanks to a donation from a private collector, the Mineralogical and Earth Museum was established; its variety of specimens and scientific importance make it a regional point of reference. Located in the historic center, a building that was once home to a mill active until the 1970s is set to become an ethno-anthropological museum.
A remarkable archaeological and mining heritage, in addition to the presence of the Helical Gallery, an authentic masterpiece of railway engineering, make the Municipality of Bortigiadas a small treasure yet to be discovered.
