Alta Gallura, located in the northeast of Sardinia, is a region rich in traditions and culture, offering a diverse calendar of events throughout the year, ranging from cultural festivals to food and wine fairs, concerts, and traditional celebrations. Below, we provide an overview of recurring events.
Open Monuments in Alta Gallura
Open Monuments in Alta Gallura takes place in mid-October (on the weekend between October 18 and 19) and is an event that allows visitors to explore monuments and/or archaeological sites usually closed to the public, involving all eleven municipalities of the Alta Gallura Union of Municipalities. During these two days, visitors can discover a variety of sites, including historic churches, museums, archaeological sites, natural beauties, and monuments, all narrated by volunteer guides, often local school students.
Spring in Gallura – from June to September
The Spring in Gallura event is a cultural and community celebration that honors the traditions, history, and identity of the Gallura region. Created with the aim of rediscovering and enhancing the local cultural heritage, the initiative involves numerous municipalities in Gallura through a series of events that take place during the spring season. During the Spring in Gallura event, visitors can participate in guided tours of historical and cultural sites, reenactments of ancient crafts and demonstrations of traditional artisanship, folk music and dance performances, tastings of typical products and dishes from Gallura cuisine, and nature excursions.
Aggius – Easter Monday in the Village
Now in its seventh edition, “Easter Monday in the Village” is an event that enlivens the streets of Aggius on Easter Monday. The day begins with outdoor activities, such as trekking, which offers visitors the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the area. The village comes alive with craft markets, food and wine stands offering a variety of typical Gallura dishes, and live music. The event culminates in the afternoon with the Easter Monday concert, in the shade of the S. Vittoria bell tower.
Aggius – Etnosfera – Festival of Peoples and Music
Etnosfera is a festival dedicated to the peoples and music of the world, held at the end of June in the village of Aggius, in the heart of Alta Gallura. This festival celebrates cultural diversity, with particular attention to linguistic minorities and local traditions. During the festival days, the streets and squares of Aggius come alive with concerts by national and international artists, film screenings, literary meetings, workshops dedicated to poetry and storytelling, and artistic exhibitions and installations that showcase local crafts and culture.
Luras – Domos Abbeltas
Domos Abbeltas is a cultural event that takes place in mid-June in Luras, in the heart of Gallura. It’s an event that celebrates local traditions and offers visitors the chance to take a journey into the past through the opening of the town’s ancient houses, transformed for the occasion into exhibition spaces for crafts, food and wine, and culture. The event is enriched by performances by local folk groups, itinerant bands, and traditional masks, which contribute to creating a festive and engaging atmosphere.
Bernardo De Muro Festival – Tempio Pausania
The Bernardo De Muro Festival is a significant cultural event held annually in Tempio Pausania and is dedicated to the famous local tenor Bernardo De Muro. The festival is organized by the Bernardo De Muro Music Academy and aims to promote opera and classical music. It’s an itinerant event that takes place from July 5 to August 7, with a rich calendar of concerts and theatrical performances. The events are held in extraordinary locations, such as the thousand-year-old olive tree in Luras and the amphitheater of Tempio Pausania, which contribute to creating a special atmosphere, making each event even more engaging and evocative.
Tempio Faber Festival – Tempio Pausania
The Tempio Faber Festival is a cultural event that takes place annually, in mid-July, in Tempio Pausania. The event consists of a musical and cultural showcase dedicated to the Genoese singer-songwriter Fabrizio De Andrè, who considered this town his second home. During the festival, the historic center of Tempio transforms into an open-air theater, hosting concerts, artistic performances, readings, and sensory experiences that pay homage to Fabrizio De Andrè’s musical and cultural legacy.
Aglientu Summer Blues Festival – Aglientu
In the heart of Gallura, among the wind-sculpted granites and the scent of Mediterranean scrub, we find the small village of Aglientu, which every summer transforms into an open-air stage, thanks to the Aglientu Summer Blues Festival, an event born in 1999 as a cultural project to enhance the territory and promote live music. Today, the festival, now in its twenty-seventh edition, offers three evenings of concerts with internationally renowned blues artists, performances by emerging talents, and convivial moments, such as the “Blues Aperitifs” in the historic center.
Palio di la Stella – Luogosanto
The Palio di la Stella, also known as the Santu Chilgu Trophy, is a unique equestrian event, being the only night palio in Sardinia. It takes place in Luogosanto, on the first weekend of August, coinciding with the feast of San Quirico. The competition sees riders engage in a test of skill: threading a suspended star along the course, illuminated for the occasion by powerful lights. It attracts many visitors.
Festa Manna di Gaddura – Luogosanto
The Festa Manna di Gaddura is one of the oldest and most heartfelt religious celebrations in Gallura, now in its 796th edition. The Festa Manna begins on August 30 with the novena at the Basilica of Our Lady of Luogosanto and culminates on September 8, the day dedicated to the Nativity of Mary. The eve is characterized by the “Festa de li Bandéri,” an automobile procession of about 30 religious flags from urban and rural churches.
